Seed Industry Competition to be Examined
October 22, 2009

The Department of Justice and the USDA plan to examine competition and antitrust concerns in the seed industry as rising seed prices and industry concentration have raised concerns.

The two agencies will hold public workshops to explore competition issues in the agriculture industry. The first such event will be held in early 2010, reports the Olney, Ill., Daily Mail newspaper. Although some of the workshops might be held in Washington, D.C., others will be held regionally. The agencies are soliciting public comments from lawyers, economists, agribusinesses, consumer groups, academics, agricultural producers, ag cooperatives and other interested parties.
